***Using Leica R lenses on a Nikon DSLR?            (March 6, 2009)

Back in my film days, I was using Nikon as well as Leica systems.  Now that I have gone totally digital, my Leica SLR gears are gathering dust.  That is, until last week.  I have found a new way to use some of the gorgeous Leica tele lenses on my Nikon D3.   I replaced the Leica lens mount on a Leica APO-extender 1.4 (tele-converter for non-Leica users) with a Nikon mount manufactured by Leitax.com.   I could have changed the mount on the individual lenses.  However, by converting the extender it allows me to use more than one Leica lens on the D3.  Yet it still preserves the lenses with their original Leica mount.  The only compromise is the 1.4X factor plus one f-stop of light.  I am happy to accept that in exchange for longer reach and the ability to mount these wonderful lenses on the D3.  I am glad that I came up with this new idea.  You can find the details about what I did at Leitax.com

Here is a test image I shot with the Leica 280mm/f4 R+ APO-extender 1.4 on a Nikon D3:
